Yaskawa Motoman robot programming: how to get started

INFORM, pendant teaching, and how no-code generation changes the picture for Motoman cells.

Yaskawa Motoman is one of the most-deployed robot brands worldwide, particularly in welding, painting, and material handling. The controllers speak INFORM, Yaskawa's native robot language, which has its own learning curve and its own ecosystem of pendants and offline tools.

The two common ways to program a Motoman

Most Motoman cells get programmed in one of two ways:

Teach pendant (Smart Pendant / FS100, YRC1000)

The classic approach — an operator drives the robot through waypoints using the smart pendant. It's reliable and well-supported, but it's slow. Complex parts that need dense waypoint patterns become impractical to teach by hand.

Offline programming with Yaskawa MotoSim

MotoSim provides a full simulation environment for Motoman cells. Programs are developed and validated offline, then deployed to the real controller. It works well for stable, repeated production but carries the same digital-twin maintenance burden as other OLP systems.

Where no-code generation fits
