Three robot types do most of the work in modern supply chains:
Picking robots

Sorting machines
Conveyor-integrated sorting robots distribute incoming parcels by destination, size, or priority. Modern systems handle thousands of items per hour and adapt to changing routing rules without reprogramming.
AI-powered arms
The newest category. Robotic arms paired with computer vision and grasp planning can pick irregular items from bins — a problem that resisted automation for years. Once it became feasible, the floor designs changed.
The throughput effect
The combined effect is that warehouse capacity has decoupled from headcount. Operations can scale throughput by adding robots, even when local labour markets won't allow them to scale headcount. For high-growth e-commerce operators, that decoupling has been existential.
