How robots helped us during COVID-19

A look back at how robotic automation supported clinical care, logistics, and manufacturing during the pandemic.

The early months of the COVID-19 pandemic put pressure on industries that had never thought of themselves as candidates for automation. Hospitals needed to keep staff out of high-exposure environments. Warehouses needed throughput without crowded floors. Factories needed to keep producing through quarantines and travel restrictions.

Clinical care

Hospitals deployed delivery robots to ferry meals, medication, and supplies through wards where every additional human exposure was a risk. Telepresence robots let doctors consult with isolated patients without entering rooms. Disinfection robots — UV-light platforms that could decontaminate empty rooms — became standard issue in some networks.

Logistics and manufacturing

E-commerce demand spiked at exactly the moment human-staffed warehouses were forced to thin floor density. Mobile robots and conveyor automation absorbed some of that gap. In manufacturing, plants that had already invested in robotic cells were able to keep running with fewer people on the floor — a resilience benefit nobody had priced in when the cells were specified.

The lasting effect

Many of the deployments that started as crisis responses became permanent. Hospitals kept their delivery robots. Warehouses kept their picking automation. And manufacturers who'd put off automation noticed that resilience itself was a return on investment.
