Use Case

Sanding & Polishing

Augmentus enables sanding and polishing processes for greater ROI in a high-mix production environment

Sanding

Sanding is a material removal process that involves applying an abrasive onto a surface of an object thereafter refining it to achieve a smooth, clear surface which is called polishing. Additionally, sanding and polishing is an important step to prepare the material for future surface treatment applications such as painting in the manufacturing process. Wooden materials are often sanded to remove old paint or varnish, while metal materials are sanded to remove rust and enhance the look of the metal in the process.

The Problem

The manual process of sanding is hazardous, leaving the safety of workers at risk as they are exposed to dust and debris which can cause significant health impacts. Sanding is also a labour-intensive and time-consuming process. Some of the sander tools such as the orbital sanders are also very bulky in size, making it difficult for operators to handle and perform accurate sanding procedures.

Furthermore, operators in the sanding industry often face high-mix low volume manufacturing requests. Hence, the job scope of a sanding work cell often has to handle and sand a variety of objects with varying sizes and shapes.

The Solution

Augmentus’ graphical tablet-based interface enables robotic programming automation for robot sanding and polishing processes so that non-technical users, with little to no knowledge in robotics, can accurately plan robot paths and trajectories with a touch of a pencil or select from pre-designed path templates to program industrial robots while the Augmentus software algorithms automatically generates robot paths and checks for singularity, reachability and collision avoidance.

Unlike conventional robot programming, Augmentus does not require CAD files for precise robot path planning. Our technology platform enables users to generate an interactive simulation environment by either scanning the work cell using their desired sensor or import CAD files. Calibration between robot and virtual environment is then completed in under 30 seconds through our one-click calibration process. This enables robot teaching and deployment to be completed in minutes instead of weeks and months. Augmentus paves the way for high ROI in a high-mix production environment, such as one found in industrial spraying processes.
